The bibles original diet

The Bible’s original diet

Written by Todd Van Natta

In the beginning, when we humans walked in the Garden of Eden, what did the LORD God command us to eat? The Bible’s answer may surprise you. God told Adam and Eve, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden (see Genesis 2:16). In other words, God commanded Adam and Eve to live on fruit. They were to eat freely from the trees that grew in the Garden. The Hebrew word for “tree” is עֵץ (“ets”). It really does mean “tree.” It is not a code-word for something else. In God’s original plan for the human race, raw fruit was the ideal human diet. However, that changed. After the fall into sin, Adam was cursed. He would become a farmer. The human diet would change. He would eat the herb of the field (see Genesis 3:18). The Hebrew word for “herb” is עֵ֫שֶׂב (“eseb”). It means grass, or any tender shoot. Think: leafy greens. Now we humans were eating raw fruit and raw leafy greens. If you add raw leafy greens to a raw fruit diet, you are still a fruitarian. That is because leafy greens have so few calories that almost all your calories are still coming from fruit. The leafy greens simply add minerals and phytonutrients that are not available in fruit alone.

This fruitarian diet was accurately depicted in the 2014 film “Noah” starring Russell Crowe. “But wait,” you might be saying.” I like eating meat and milk and grains and beans. Wasn’t that allowed?” No. That came later in the biblical narrative. Much, much later. “How much later?” After the Flood. After the Flood is when God permitted us to become omnivores. As they exited the Ark, God said to Noah and his family, Genesis 9:3. Every moving thing that lives will be food for you. As I gave you the green herb, I have given everything to you. Now humans were permitted to hunt down and kill animals and eat them. They were not required to do so. Rather, it was merely allowed. Being a fruitarian was still permitted. In fact, the Bible never prohibited us from going back to a fruitarian diet. The Bible never ever speaks poorly of it. You might be wondering, “It wasn’t that way for very long, was it? From creation to flood was just a short time, wasn’t it?” Actually, it was a long time. A very long time. According to the Timeline for the History of Judaism, the Flood was in the biblical year of 1,610. That means 1,610 years after the creation. We humans were raw fruitarians for the first 1,600+ years of biblical history! Jesus was born in the biblical year of approximately 3,756. That means humans were fruitarians for 42% of Old Testament history! Would you let the Bible inspire you to … Try a fruitarian diet? Try a fruitarian diet as a way of fasting? Add more raw fruits and vegetables to your diet? Medical experts are always telling us to eat more fruits and vegetables. Perhaps without knowing it, they are urging us to eat the Bible’s original diet for us humans!   NOTES From the Timeline for the History of Judaism: EVENTJEWISH YEARWESTERN CALENDAR Adam and Eve created13,760 BC Noah born1,0562,704 BC The Flood1,6102,150 BC Abraham born1,9471,813 BC Jesus born~ 3,756~ 4 BC Now 5,770-some 2,015 AD   CAUTION Fasting is only for those who are medically capable. I believe in Jesus Christ. I’m in love with Jesus! I believe the Bible. I love the Bible. For decades, I've been reading it cover-to-cover, again and again and again. I’ve memorized a whole lot of Bible verses. Most of all, I want the Bible to help us fall more deeply in love with God the Father, with Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, with other people, and with ourselves.
